DOZENS OF INDIVIDUALS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A STATEWIDE INITIATIVE SATURDAY AT THE MAURY COUNTY COURTHOUSE GETTING MINOR CRIMINAL CHARGES EXPUNGED FROM THEIR RECORDS.  ACCORDING TO THE DAILY HERALD, THE MAURY COUNTY EXPUNGEMENT CLINIC, COORDINATED BY ALL HANDS ON DECK, A NONPROFIT COMMUNITY GROUP, WAS SIMILAR TO OTHER EVENTS HELD IN DAVIDSON AND SHELBY COUNTIES AND FOLLOWS GOVERNOR BILL LEE'S SINGING OF A BILL THAT ELIMINATES STATE FEES FOR EXPUNGEMENTS.  THE GROUP WORKED WITH PRE-REGISTERING AND PROVIDED A LIST OF POSSIBLE CASES TO THE COURT FOR CONSIDERATION.  THOSE WHOSE CASES WERE DISMISSED IN COURT OR HAD NOT GUILTY VERDICTS WERE ELIGIBLE FOR EXPUNGEMENT.  ALSO AN OFFENDER MUST NOT HAVE COMMITTED ANY CRIMES WITHIN FIVE YEARS SINCE RELEASE FROM INCARCERATION.  NEWLY EXPUNGED INDIVIDUALS WERE ENCOURAGED TO REGISTER TO VOTE AND ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE TENNESSEE CAREER CENTER AND THE COLUMBIA HOUSING AUTHORITY, OFFERING POTENTIAL JOBS AND SHELTER.
