A longtime nurse practitioner and the owner of Lawrenceburg’s North Terrace Medical Clinic has been charged with more than 70 felonies.
Patsy Janet Burks was arrested and charged with 37 counts of prescription fraud, 37 counts of identity theft, and two counts of TennCare fraud, according to information released by the office of District Attorney Brent Cooper.
Both prescription fraud and identity theft are considered Class D felonies, which carry a sentence of two to four years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
Burks is accused of using the identity of at least one other individual to fill prescriptions for herself over the course of more than a year.
The charges follow a joint investigation carried out by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the local district attorney’s office.
Cooper said the matter stems from a series of rumors that gained legitimacy when a resident came forward with additional information.
A Lawrence County grand jury indicted Burks on December 17th.
Burks was taken into custody that afternoon and released later that day on a $25,000 bond.
Burks is scheduled to appear in Lawrence County's General Sessions Court for an arraignment hearing on January 22nd.
