TWO COLBERT COUNTY CITIES HAVE VOTED TO CREATE A NEW SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY. ACCORDING TO THE TIMES DAILY, THE NEW AUTHORITY WOULD CONSIST OF THE CITIES OF MUSCLE SHOALS, SHEFFIED AND TUSCUMBIA AND WOULD BE UTILIZED IF THE CURRENT WASTE AUTHORITY MOVES FORWARD WITH THE PURCHASE OF CHEROKEE INDUSTRIAL LANDFILL. BOTH SHEFFIELD AND TUSCUMBIA CITY COUNCILS HAVE APPROVED RESOLUTIONS AND MUSCLE SHOALS CITY COUNCIL IS PLANNING TO DISCUSS THE MATTER MONDAY. IF MUSCLE SHOALS APPROVES A RESOLUTION, PAPERWORK CAN BE FILED TO FORM THE NEW PUBLIC CORPORATION. OFFICIALS ADVISED THE NEW AUTHORITY IS NECESSARY AS THE COUNTY CANNOT ENTER INTO CONTRACTS LONGER THAN THREE YEARS. THE ORIGINAL AUTHORITY WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE AND OVERSEE THE OPERATIONS OF THE COLBERT COUNTY LANDFILL AND RECYCLING PROGRAM UNTIL THE AUTHORITY DETERMINES WHICH DIRECTION IT WILL GO.
